ACADIA NATIONAL PARK, MAINE

With last year's government shutdown, this last fall marks our second annual trip up to Maine and our first annual trip actually IN the park. We camped in the beautiful (but relatively cramped) Blackwoods campground and finally got to drive up for sunset on Cadillac Mountain.

This year we allotted for much more time at our beloved Cobscook Bay State Park. Maine always has it's own plans for us....we got rained out after the first night but at least we brought our kayaks this year! We took off right from our campsite (the water rose and fell with the tides just feet from our tent) and explored some islands.

ACADIA AND WHITE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARKS

For months and months and months, a fall road trip through the oranges and yellows of Maine and New Hampshire were in the making. After many new gear purchases and after wrapping up my first window installation at Anthropologie, we finally took off for a week long camping and driving trip.

Among the cold and other things I was concerned with in camping in October (can't get away with that too often in Colorado!), the government shutting down was not one of them. After our second night of scanning radio channels for NPR and the impending shutdown (during which we stayed in Portland, ME with a dear friend and then an adorable little Airbnb farm house), we drove up to Acadia to find it closed and gated.

So, with our camping reservations cancelled for the next three days, we took the opportunity to head as far northeast as Maine could take us. As fate had it, we ended up camping in the most beautiful park I've ever seen in my life--Cobscook Bay State Park. We were among only three other campers and had our pick of secluded, mossy, wooded sites overlooking the bay and the calm waters dotted with herons. And although we were soon kicked out the next day as the federal shut down even began affecting the State Park, we continued to the eastern most point of the United States--Lubec, Maine. Snapped a shot of the candy-striped lighthouse and hopped back in the car to head to our next destination, the White Mountains.

While the White Mountains is also a National Park and were technically closed, there was no gate to hinder our plans for hiking and driving. We (along with many others) took the opportunity to hike and summit Mt. Chocorua (via Piper Trail this is a 9 mile hike with 2,700 ft elevation gain within 4.5 miles...phew)
